Jericho Rewind: Copywrite Ink

"This piece would have been better served as seven posts, but since my blog is more about business communication than fandom, I felt it would best serve me to fast-track some solutions for Jericho fans and CBS with seven points and hopefully turn the largest show cancellation protest into the beginnings of a long-running series with more mileage than anyone imagined, fans included.

Those are my seven tips for saving Jericho for the long haul, which pre-assumes that the two drivers currently driving the bus will listen to reason. For the fans, it pre-assumes you can get past the “nut war” and move forward without fractioning, be more courteous in discussing which characters are most expendable (after the actors were so good to give you shout outs), and take care NOT to employ a flag that characters of Jericho would be appalled to see as a fan logo. For CBS et al, it pre-assumes you can get past being short-sighted to realize you actually have an asset with tremendous potential, capitalize on unlimited non-television spin-offs (books, film shorts, games, etc.) that touch on relevant issues today, and give the fans an immersive world that they can play with so you can focus on the show."

To Jericho Fans: Old and New

"In the world of communication (advertising, marketing, public relations, political consultation, etc.), people, products, and companies live and die by perception every day and all the time. But, to actively live with the mistaken belief that perception is reality is fraught with peril, delusion, and consequence."

Jericho will return for a Season 2. Jericho Season 1 DVD was released. Now what? For some, the perception seems to be that we can sit back and relax and wait for Season 2. There's no more work to be done. Right?

The reality is that we are not assured a Season 3. We are not assured that Jericho won't be canceled again. We must not delude ourselves into thinking all is well.

To all those who fought during the Nuts campaign;thank you. No one person ever has or ever will save Jericho all on their own. It will take all of us! No, there is no Leader because most of us are adults and we know what we must do. There is no idea more important than another and no one person is more important than another. Believing there is a leader "is fraught with peril, delusion, and consequence."

To new fans: We need you! We need you to help us fight for Jericho. You are important!!!! Your ideas are needed!!! Help us promote Jericho. Please.

Just like in the real world you will meet fans you may not like. As I've always said, " I don't have to like you to work with you." Not liking you does not give me the right to belittle you, call you names, or besmirch your reputation. I will work with anybody who is honestly working for Jericho. I hope you will too.

A Monster Fan Interview: DBalcer

I saw Debby around the CBS board for a while until I really started to pay attention. She doesn't always have a lot to say but she's always ready to Digg, comment, and help others. I think she's a great person. Hope you do too.

1. When did you start watching Jericho and why?

I did not watch Jericho when it premiered. I had no interest in watching a
show about nuclear war in the United States. The only thing that drew me in
was Gerald McRaney. I love watching him. I saw the commercials for the
episodes after the bomb and the show looked more like a show I would be
interested in so I watched episode 4: Walls of Jericho and was hooked.

2. What made you keep watching?

I loved that Jericho was about how people survived and did so with their
morals intact. I love the relationships between the characters. I
especially love the character Johnston Green. His character embodies the
values that I hold dear. My husband loved the Sci-fi aspect of the show as
well as the characters. We watch Jericho together.

3. What else do you enjoy besides Jericho? Any hobbies?

I am active in my church. I love to read and have an eclectic taste in books. I love going to see the Georgia Bulldogs play football.

4. What would you like to see at Fan Central?

I like Fan Central but wish
it was more interactive. I enjoy reading what Shaun has to say but wish it
could be expanded to include more contributors.

5. Which actor/actress on Jericho would you most like to meet?

Gerald McRaney. I have followed his career since his days on Simon and Simon. I have loved every show he has been in.

6. Which character is most like you?

Gail Johnston. I am the mother of two
grown daughters. I have been married 28 years. I feel that she and I would
have much in common.

7. Why do you like to Digg?

I feel that digging gives us a bigger footprint
on the internet which exposes us to more potential viewers. I also am a
news junkie so I like reading the different articles.

8. How can we attract new viewers?

By telling everyone we meet about the show. By buying the DVD and sharing it
with friends who haven't seen Jericho. I believe once you watch the first
few shows they will be hooked. Jericho has something for everyone.

9. Any comments?

The one thing good that came out of the cancellation of Jericho was the
chance to interact with other fans on the CBS message board. I came to the
CBS site to see what information I could find on who dropped the bomb but I
didn't read or post on the message boards until Jericho was cancelled. I am
proud to be one of the nuts who saved Jericho.

Debby from SC

A Monster Fan Interview: Starlace

Laci is also known as Starlace. I'm sure she's familiar to everyone on the CBS board and beyond. I got quite a few requests for an interview with her so here it is.

1. What do you like about Jericho?

Everything! What, that's too simple? To me, Jericho is the perfect example of when writing, production and acting mesh perfectly. The writing is superb and even though Jericho deals with the gravity of very intense issues, it still makes me laugh every week. It's not afraid to tackle complex and sometimes controversial plotlines. The characters are fully developed and feel like real people to me. There is not a weak link in the cast and they breathe life into the words they are given. In terms of acting, I'm a big believer in the idea that 'you're only as good as the people you work with.' Jericho demonstrates this for me...the actors bring out the best in each other and as a result, their characters continue to keep me interested. Jericho feels very real to me and I guess that's what I like the most.

2. What is your favorite episode/character and why?

Tough question! My favorite episode is Why We Fight...it made me laugh, it made me cry...what more could I ask for? Jake is probably my favorite character though I honestly love them all...I'm particularly intriqued by his past and the effect it's having on him today. I also love the dynamic between Jake, Emily and Jonah and how much it has shaped who they are. I should probably say I really like Mimi too because I can totally relate to where she's coming from. In that kind of world, I'd definitely be the city girl who doesn't know the first thing about being on a farm. I'm a quick learner though.

3. If I had never watched Jericho what would you say to urge me to
watch?

I'd tell you it has something for everyone. There is drama, comedy, action, romance. It will make you think and challenge you, but it will also make you laugh. After an entire season of telling me it was 'too scary', I finally got my mother to watch Jericho with me during the campaign and she was hooked! If she liked it, I can pretty much guarantee you will too!

4. How do you think we can attract new viewers?

Word of mouth is probably our biggest assett. Continue to tell everyone you know about Jericho! I've already heard some great stories from Rangers about who they spread the word to. I try to use every opportunity I can to talk up the show, including the time I was taken to the hospital by ambulance and told my EMTs all about it! (don't worry...it was nothing serious). The internet has been a great resource for us and I think we've got to continue to use it by blogging, digging articles and staying active on the message boards. Wear your Jericho t-shirts whenever you can!

With the DVD set coming out in October, I think we've got to make them fly off the shelves! If it sells well, that may pique the interest of people who've never heard of Jericho or never watched it.

And as a suggestion to my fellow college students out there...see if you can arrange viewing parties in your dorms! I know Friday isn't the best night to get a bunch of college kids to sit around a tv, but if you offer free food, I bet people would show up and you might just get them hooked on Jericho! And if you can't afford free food, peanuts will do...

5. What do you like about the CBS board?

It's been a great place to meet people and discuss all things Jericho. Whether I'm looking for some lighthearted humor or a serious debate, it's all there on the CBS board. I always know I can go there for the latest news or to catch up with people I've come to know throughout the Jericho experience. I also appreciate that the cast and crew have used it to communicate with us. It feels like a special place for everyone in the Jericho family to come together.

6. Anything else you'd like to add about yourself or Jericho can go
here.
I've had a very hard year personally and being a part of the Jericho family made it so much better! I just want to say it's been great to be amongst such wonderful company throughout the campaign. In the grand scheme of things, my role has been rather minimal, but to be associated with the amazing people involved in this campaign has been a wonderful experience. The Rangers never cease to amaze me with not only their creativity, but their initiative to see through many of the great ideas people have come up with! It's been an honor to be part of this and I've made some great friends who I wouldn't have met if it weren't for Jericho.

So thank you Rangers for being the awesome people you are and thank you CBS and everyone involved in the creation of Jericho for not only bringing the show back, but for giving us a show worth fighting for in the first place.

Thank you, Laci.

A Monster Fan Interview: Michele

Michele is another Jericho Ranger. I want to thank her for agreeing to this interview and for working for Jericho. Good job, Michele.

1. How long have you been a Jericho fan?

I have been a fan since I saw the first commercial for it last year.

2. What do you love most about the show?

I love the fact that it deals with the "What if's". Its not one of those mind-numbing reality shows that fry your brain worse then drugs do.

3. Would you join a Jericho Fan Club? Why or why not?

Absolutely. I think it would be a great way to show the cast and crew how much we love the show, and look forward to watching every week.

4. Which episode is your favorite?

I really don't have a specific favorite, although the Finale really kept me on the edge of my seat.

5. How would you explain to a new viewer what Jericho is about?

I've gotten quite a few friends hooked on it just by simply saying it is a realistic show that deals with the trials and tribulations of life during a nuclear holocaust. Its not a show you watch to see who is the grossest things or who can sing or dance better.

Thanks again, Michele. Glad you're getting more people to watch. You rock!

" We Are A Nielsen Family"-- Excellent article
"Here in the US (and 40 other countries), for the last 60+ years, Television Ratings have been managed by the Nielsen Media Research company. They have a special magic sauce that let's them calculate "Reach" - the number of unique viewers for any show at any time. There's lots of good details on this at Wikipedia."

Go here to read one of the best blog articles I've ever seen about Jericho. I was very surprised when I found it because it's a real estate blog by Midori Miller. Be sure to check out the photo on the right. Thanks Midori. Hope you'll write more like this.
