Jericho On Forbes

"Viewers use creative ways such as sending Rice-A-Roni.to push the networks to save favorite shows. Journeyman campaign is covered as are the Jericho and Veronica Mars campaigns. Will the Journeyman campaign work? Email the reporter, Lacey Rose, to let her know what you think: lrose@forbes.net"

"Terminator and Jericho--Science Fiction as a Preparedness Motivational Tool"

"The strike has now officially impacted the major talent agencies and management companies.

ICM invoked force majeure late Wednesday on as many as five agents in the motion picture group. In addition, the percentery instituted a series of pay cuts for agents and executives making six-figure salaries. The percentages range to a high of 30% for agents making the most money and service clients in areas that have been debilitated by the writers strike."

Jericho: Meebo Chat

"An example is CBS' show "Jericho" that they almost canceled. One of the things that ["Jericho" online support groups] did was organize a Meebo room to discuss how to get CBS to put it back on the air. It's just one of many, many things that Internet users did. So, fast-forward three months or so, and CBS put "Jericho" on the air, and what they did was, they put a lot of video content from the show inside a Meebo room and put that on the CBS site so viewers can keep in touch with the show until the new season's ready and talk with each other."

**** I can't believe they'd have the nerve to mention the lousy Jericho chat. What a mess! I never saw so much porn and people pretending to be other people. Meebo and CBS should be ashamed.****

A Monster Fan Interview: Jeff Braverman

Who doesn't know Nutty Jeff Braverman? From Nuts To CBS to a huge fan of Jericho,Jeff has been instrumental in the fight to bring Jericho back.

Jeff remains very busy. He flew to Chicago recently to speak at the Direct Marketing Association Conference. His topic: Nuts to Jericho: The Method Behind the Madness that Brought Back a Canceled TV Show.

If Jeff can reel in new fans you can bet he will. I was able to catch up with busy Jeff for a few minutes and here's what he had to say:

1. First, I want to thank you for everything you have done for Jericho.

My pleasure! It was a blast.

2. You worked so hard sending and delivering nuts to CBS. How long did it take after the nuts stopped for you to slow down or did you?

About a week to finally return to normal and catch up on sleep!!!

3. How did you really feel the day that 10,000 pounds of nuts hit CBS in New York?

I was exuberant. Over memorial day weekend it suddenly dawned on me that we could have a massive splash and truck in 6,000 pounds on our own to accompany the 4,000 pounds with UPS. We got a late start and missed the AP photographer, which was a bummer, but we arrived alongside UPS and it was exciting to see a bunch of fans as well. Of course it was awfully stressful ensuring CBS took the peanuts without giving me too much trouble, but we worked it out without a hitch!

4. How was your trip to China?

My trip was fantastic.

5. Do they know about Jericho?

During the campaign several people from China had written to me saying how they were fans. And I of course wore the Jericho shirt at the Great Wall, so, oh, they know!!!

6. What did you think about Nina Tassler after you met her?

She seemed nice, but our interaction was short. She seemed like her head was spinning a bit as the party was about to start.

7. During the Nuts campaign the press went wild and you spoke with many of them. What was the best and worst of that experience?

The best was probably Quality Rock 99.9 KTYD - Santa Barbara, California. I was on the air twice with them, they were incredibly nice and totally supportive of us, and they were amazed at the fans. I had written on my blog about going on the air, and within 1 minute they said they received about 25 emails in support! It was incredible. A funny media anecdote is the following: I was in California at a supermarket buying food for a hike with my friend. At the checkout I asked him if he saw the National Enquirer. He then grabbed it from the shelf and I told him to turn to page 20. After seeing my photo he said, “No way dude!” Haha.

After doing the nut drop in NY, I had an interview with Fair Game on Public Radio International. They were trying to trip me up and make a mockery of our campaign, so it wasn’t that enjoyable.

8. Are you still selling Jericho items like shirts and party trays, etc.?

We are still selling some Jericho shirts and Jericho Party Snackers. The Jericho Party Mix is selling pretty briskly as well.

9. You also set up a forum for Jericho fans and it's become a popular place. Thank you for doing that too.

You bet.

10. If you had it all to do over again would you do anything differently?

Nope…I think everything went off pretty flawlessly. Well, I would have been more careful early on in the campaign and wouldn’t have smashed my head into a beam. All in, I couldn’t have been happier with the results. Jericho is coming back and Greensburg got over $20k from us!

11. Did you get to meet most of the cast when you traveled to California?

I met about 6 or 7 cast members. It was awesome.

12. What would you like to tell Jericho fans about promoting Season 2?

Hehe…Pretty simply. Watch. Tell your friends to watch. Get 10 new people hooked.

Anything you'd like to add?

NUTS!

Jericho and Nutsonline: Replay

I have had multiple anonymous postings. I have re-set the comment feature for registered users and welcome those whose comments were not allowed through to repost them.

It was brought to my attention recently that there is incorrect information going around about how Nutsonline joined the Jericho campaign. So, I found this article (there are more like it) that says, "Jericho" fan Jeff Knoll helped coordinate with Braverman to get Nuts Online to serve as a distributor. Knoll was one of the originators of the campaign, and his biggest hope is that the network pays attention."

"Jeff Knoll, a fan in Oakville, Ontario, was thinking about shipping some nuts but was worried about them getting delayed in customs. That's when he stumbled across nutsonline.com.
He started talking to Jeffrey Braverman, whose family has run the nut distribution company now called nutsonline.com for three generations."

Just wanted to give credit where credit is due. Somebody might write a book.

I found this article to be quite interesting as I've heard so many people recently asking the same question. So, CBS, do you have the answer? Why haven't you done more to promote the DVD? We've given you plenty of free marketing yet you give us what? No promotion. Are you going to bother promoting when Jericho returns? You sure did a lousy job this summer with even letting people know when Jericho might be on. And, I thought CBS did care. Not anymore.

Did You Forget Jericho? - DVD News

"The first season of Jericho hit DVD this week but you’d never know it looking around. Considering all the fuss that surrounded the series a couple of months ago, I would have expected parades, national news coverage, and a hard press by CBS that included banner ads during all of their shows, every other commercial spot, and integration into their other programming (“Hey, I know we’re always sitting around a bar and chatting but did any of you get a chance to check out season one of Jericho? It’s Legendary!). Instead, word surrounding the release is as quiet as if it really was isolated from the rest of the world."

"When I read about Jericho getting canned like many people I just didn’t care. I’d never watched it, didn’t know anyone who watched, and honestly I stopped worrying about Skeet Ulrich’s career after Chill Factor figuring he had died of embarrassment….though somehow Cuba Gooding Jr survived long enough to make Daddy Day Camp god rest his soul. The show popped up on my radar back at Comic-Con where CBS brought the cast out to promote the shows return from the TV grave. For those in the dark again: The show was killed off after the seasons cliff hanger ending…fans were understandably pissed off having given up 964 minutes of their D&D time decided to send nuts to the offices of CBS in rebellion…the nuts being a reference to the last episode…that or they learned of Nina Tassler (The CBS Pres) severe allergic to peanuts…either way I’m assuming nobody sent macadamia nuts."

A Monster Fan Interview: Kmac

Today we continue our series called A Monster Fan Interview. We have all worked together since before the Nuts campaign so I thought it would be fun to ask fans some questions about Jericho. Without further ado it is my great pleasure to introduce Jericho fan and lover kmac.

1. What attracted you to Jericho?
I don't watch any TV at all so I had never heard of the show. I stumbled on it while I was looking through On Demand. I watched 1 episode, then another, and before I knew it I had watched the entire 1st half of Season 1 in one sitting!

2. What is your favorite episode and why?
Episode 14 Heart of Winter is my favorite. It just hits so many emotions in one episode from laughing to being anxious, to crying. It is just a great Episode.

3. If I had never watched Jericho what would you say to urge me to watch?
I would just point out the fact that it has something for everyone. Action, suspense, drama, you will laugh a lot, and there is a bit of romance in there too!

4. Would you join a Jericho Fan Club? Why or why not?
I would join a fan club. I think it is probably the only fan club I would join, though. I would like to have a chance for all of us to kind of band together again in a way that a lot of us haven't done since the fight to bring the show back. Maybe a fan club is the way to do that.

5. What would you like to see a Fan Club do?
I would like to see it promote the show, I would like to see CBS give us some more access to certain things for use within the fan club. Mostly I would just like to see the members grow and grow so we can continue having this show around for many years to come!

Thank you to kmac for all your hard work for Jericho.

Jericho, Nielsen, and You-Part V

Ratings / share and total viewers

Nielsen Television Ratings are reported by ranking the percentage for each show of all viewers watching television at a given time. A single national ratings point represents 1%, or 1,152,000 households for the 2006-07 season.

Share is the percentage of television sets in use tuned to a specific program. These numbers are usually reported as (ratings points/share). For example, Nielsen may report Jericho as receiving a 9.2/15 during its broadcast, meaning 9.2%, or 10,598,400 households on average were tuned in at any given moment. Additionally, 15% of all televisions in use at the time were tuned into this program. Nielsen re-estimates the number of households each August for the upcoming television season.

Nielsen also provides statistics on estimated total number of viewers and on specific demographics. Advertising rates are influenced by the total number of viewers and by particular demographics, such as age, sex, economic class, and area.

There is some public critique regarding accuracy and potential bias within Nielsen's rating system. In June of 2006, however, Nielsen announced a sweeping plan to revamp its entire methodology to include all types of media viewing in its sample.

Criticisms of the system:

1. Since viewers are aware of being part of the Nielsen sample, it can lead to bias in recording and viewing habits. This criticism is common to any and all survey research. This trend seems to be more common for news programming and popular prime time programming. Also, daytime viewing and late night viewing tend to be under-reported by the diary methodology.

2. Another criticism of the measuring system itself is that it is not random in the statistical sense of the word. Only a small fraction of the population is selected and only those that actually accept are used as the sample size. Of the sample data that is collected advertisers will not pay for time shifted (recorded for replay at a different time) programs [5] rendering the 'raw' numbers useless. In many local areas, the difference between a rating that keeps a show on the air and one that will cancel it is so small as to be statistically insignificant, and yet the show that just happens to get the higher rating will survive.[6]

3. In 2004, News Corporation retained the services of public relations firm Glover Park to launch a campaign aimed at delaying Nielsen's plan to replace its aging household electronic data collection methodology in larger local markets with its newer and more accurate electronic People Meter system. The advocates in the public relations campaign charged that data derived from the newer People Meter system represented a bias toward underreporting minority viewing, which could lead to discrimination in employment against minority actors and writers. Nielsen countered the campaign by revealing its sample composition counts. According to Nielsen Media Research's sample composition counts, as of November 2004, nationwide, African American Households using People Meters represented 6.7% of the Nielsen sample, compared to 6.0% in the general population. Latino Households represent 5.7% of the Nielsen sample, compared to 5.0% in the general population. This showed that ethnic minorities were actually overrepresented in the sample, contrary to what was charged in the News Corporation's public relations campaign.

4. Another criticism of the Nielsen ratings system is its lack of a system for measuring television audiences in environments outside the home, such as college dormitories, bars, and other public places where television is frequently viewed, often by large numbers of people in a common setting. Recently, however, Nielsen has announced plans to incorporate viewing by away-from-home college students into its sample. Current measurement devices offered by all media measurement companies in these scenarios are challenged in determining whether an audience member was just in general proximity to a television signal, or whether they were actually paying attention to the programming. Internet TV viewing is another rapidly growing market for which Nielsen Ratings fail to account for viewer impact. Apple iTunes, atomfilms, YouTube, and some of the networks' own websites (eg: ABC.com, CBS.com) provide full-length web-based programming, either subscription-based or ad-supported.

Jericho, Nielsen, and You

There continues to be much talk regarding the Nielsen ratings so I am going to do a series to try and help all of us understand them better. While ratings are not my main focus they are a spoke in the wheel. The summer repeats of Jericho have not had the best numbers and the Fall season numbers are extremely important.I don't want to wait until Fall to learn how to fight the Nielsen ratings system if necessary. We'll look at the history of the company, how homes are selected, tools, and more. We must understand what we're up against if we one day decide to take on this battle.

Arthur Nielsen began his career testing products for manufacturing clients to ensure they performed up to specifications. Companies then had no way of knowing how best to spend their advertising dollars. Soon after, Arthur Nielsen essentially founded the field of market research by visiting sample stores in various geographic areas in order to track the movement of different brands then told clients how well their products were doing against the competition.
He inaugurated a National Radio Index for broadcasters and advertisers in 1942, followed by a television ratings service in 1950.

First, Nielsen scientifically selects a group of households that mirrors the population at large. Samples include homes from all 50 states. There are people from cities, towns, suburbs and rural areas. There are homeowners and apartment dwellers — some with children and some without — across a broad range of demographic categories. Nielsen includes people of all ages, income groups, geographic areas, ethnicities and educational levels — all in proportion to their presence in the population at large. Once homes are selected and agree to participate, great care is taken to protect their identity and privacy, and no data about individuals or specific households are ever disclosed.

Can you volunteer? No. Nielsen says, "To include volunteers would violate basic laws of random sampling practice and skew our results. A truly representative sample of the population can only be generated using statistical methods of selection."
Wikipedia defines a simple random sample as "a group of subjects (a sample) chosen from a larger group (a population). Each subject from the population is chosen randomly and entirely by chance, such that each subject has the same probability of being chosen at any stage during the sampling process. This process and technique is known as Simple Random Sampling."

How does Nielsen select a household?
Households are selected through one of two different methods:
1. Geographic selection (area probability sampling) in the national sample and larger markets.
2. Randomly-generated telephone numbers (Total Telephone Frame) in smaller markets.

Nielsen's statistical research department begins with broad, U.S. Census-defined geographic areas then they send field representatives to identify every housing unit in these areas, regardless of size or accessibility. Nielsen will then narrow the selection down to individual, randomly-selected housing units. Using this method, all households have an equal probability of selection into the sample. This allows for complete coverage of the country, since no homes are excluded by design.

"For Total Telephone Frame sampling, Nielsen's statistical research department uses random digit-dialing to generate a call list that includes both published and unpublished telephone numbers in a Designated Market Area (DMA). Rather than using recordings, our Call Center staffs in Florida and Kentucky personally make multiple attempts to reach households, ensuring that they have a chance to be included in the sample."

To All Old and New Jericho Rangers

The following was written by DarkCrystal :

Dear Jericho Fans;

As a most humble representative of your ranks, it has come to my attention, and most certainly the attention of people actually watching the outcome of this fan based action, that somehow, you all think that this show is safe, and that the job is done.

It is not. No matter what kind of flowery spin the media or Nina Tassler or anybody puts on it, your show, the very show that you all spent time and money on to get back, is still in danger. It still needs your help.

This fandom is very unique. Most fandoms just get to sit around, make friends, talk to each other, talk about the characters and storylines and be what normal fans can be. Our fandom is not, and cannot be that way until we are past these seven episodes and virtually guaranteed a Season 3. We aren't given that chance to be normal, because we stepped forward and basically put ourselves out there to say that we were going to be faithful to this show, give us a chance, tell US what it will take to save this show, keep this show, and preserve this show. And we got it. But we only got part of it.

The show needs numbers. And now that the review episodes are gone, and the pilot episodes are gone, and now we are into the second half of the season without a rope, it's going to be more and more difficult to get people to watch and stay watching during those first thirty most vital minutes. CBS will do their part, as much as they deem fit, whether we like it or not. We HAVE to do our newly designated part to meet them halfway.

The Nielsen ratings suck. We can't change them overnight to suit our needs. We have to play on that field, under those rules, because the ball is already in play. We have to finish the game under the existing rules, that is just how it has to be. It's like finding a needle in a haystack. NCIS has had no problem finding said Needles. CSI found those needles. Ghost Whisperer found needles to keep them from going over the brink. We have the opportunity and several chances to find those needles, something that they don't have to do, but we do.

The media is coming out with quotes and articles on Jericho again. Blogs are starting to kick into motion again. Don't just hang on what you want it to say, or one part you want to believe in, and disregard the rest. As ka4ist and others have stressed many times, read it. Reread it. Digest it. Read between the lines. Read how the words are carefully stated. And even if it is positive, don't get lax and figure that it's all good and taken care of. Because, the reality is, it's not. This is also the same corporation who rushed to announcement, without even having the actor's resigned, just to get us to stop nutting them. This is the same corporation who made no bones about it, that they would do what they could, but it was in the fan's hands to get people to watch, and that things were still reliant upon their system, nothing else. Nothing has changed, other than us as fans who have sat back and just figured the deed is done, and it will take care of itself. (Or at least that is what the general actions have conveyed.)

Participate. Those of us who were around for Save Jericho still have a job to do. Operation Watch Jericho is still in our hands. It's ok to have fun, make friends amongst us, and have some relaxation moments, but not a permanent siesta. We still are charged with the mission to get out there, motivate present fans to keep watching even if they can recite the script line for line. We have to get newbies to the seats, and unconfused about the storyline since they are REALLY coming in mid stride now. We are all ambassadors in this, and each and every one of us has to welcome the newbies into the mythology and intricacies of the show, and get them to sit and watch it. And to keep watching it. If they get hooked, gettng them to help spread the love afterwards will come naturally to them, as it has to us. For the present fans, they need to be attentive, follow through with the deal that was made with us to watch, watch it their way, and to finish this game with a desirable result.

We have to prove that we are not a bunch of splinter groups, and cliques, and that we still take the future of this show very seriously. We have to prove that we are still one fandom under Jericho. Indivisible. For the sanctity and preservation of a show that a lot of us worked hard on. Personal egos, have GOT to go. We came together to save the show. We aren't done yet.

In closing, many of you are my friends. Others I haven't gotten to know you yet, but hope that I do. But let's remember what we all came here to do: we all stepped forward on the internet for the show. And this show, regardless of everything, still needs our help, and it's still going to be a long haul between now and the end of the year, but what we do now, is STILL vital to the survival of the show.

The fat lady was only clearing her throat. She still has an entire opera to get through.

Tribute To Rich

Once in a great while a show comes along that fans fight for. That show is Jericho.
Once in a great while a blogger comes along who joins that fight and becomes an unsung hero.

I haven't been blogging long but I've been reading blogs for quite some time now. I have a lot of favorites and some of the various postings have blown me away. I must say, though, that nobody has ever totally amazed me the way Rich of Copywrite Ink does.

Let me tell you about Rich. According to his profile Rich is an accredited business communicator. (That means I can't afford his services.) He is the President of Copywrite, Ink which is a writing services and communications firm.(That means I can't even afford for him to write me a letter.) I admit I don't know what his fees are but I do know the suggestions he has given Jericho fans would have cost us more than all the Nuts Jeff Braverman will sell in his lifetime.

Why am I writing about Rich? Because Rich has been down in the trenches with us. He's as much a Jericho Ranger as anyone. Do yourself a favor and go to Rich's blog and read every article he's written on Jericho.

http://copywriteink.blogspot.com/

Be sure to read " Creating Fandom: The Jericho Universe." It's very relevant today as it was then.

I'm not saying other bloggers weren't good to us-they were. Many had wonderful suggestions. When I say Rich was in the trenches I mean he has posted on the main board as well as at JerichoRallyPoint. He has asked for information and has come to understand this campaign. He has replied to our comments and has cared about everything we did and will do. He wants us to succeed. And, we will.

I forgot to say we will succeed IF we all want it bad enough. Rich's article of today is a must read. Hopefully, it will be accepted in the same spirit in which it was written. I will only say that someone commented, " Dissent is good." Yes, it is and it can change things. Feel free to dissent and suggest a better way to handle a promotion or idea but we cannot allow Jericho's future to lie in the hands of those who say Free Speech when what they really mean is your name got in the paper & mine didn't. As Rich said today, " The egos have landed". It's up to all of us to make sure Ego doesn't fly again. I want Season 3,4,5,6,7,and more.

Thank you, Rich, for all you've done and will continue to do. Don't try to be modest now. I'd have to dissent.
