Jericho: Daily Fix

RubberPoultry

See this. A real winner.

"OK, you guys are the best and are helping to keep me honest in my vow to blog daily on Jericho until the premiere.

Before I get to the good stuff, a reminder that I’m looking for guest bloggers for Season 2. What’s that, you ask? Check out the summer rerun guest bloggers. Margie & Edna are taking care of the premiere, while Yvonne (Aunt Vonna) has ep 2, Erika (kricka) snagged ep 3 and newbie (to Jericho guest blogging, that is) Clarke Ingram (gushing fanboy that he is of Sprague Grayden) will tackle episode 5."

Thanks Kricka. You're awesome.

Writer's Strike: New Video

"Broadcast TV was always the place to go for multicourse banquets of programming -- anywhere from 13 to 20 or more weeks of your favorite dramas and comedies. Thanks to the writers strike, however, network TV is looking like a nibbler's delight: eight snackable episodes of "Lost," just a taste of "Terminator".

he Writers Guild of America action has forced shorter story arcs on networks and viewers; had writers been available, of course, viewers would be watching a full slate of "24," in which each episode represents one hour in a 24-hour day. A sense is evolving, however, that shorter might be better going forward and that the strike could permanently alter the way TV is programmed and sold.

"A new model that has a continuous season with continuous new programming would benefit all," said Chuck Bachrach, exec VP-director of media communications at independent agency RPA."

Monster Fan of the Week

What can I say about a person who has earned my respect and admiration? I can say he's a terrific Jericho Ranger, a fine artist, and a wonderful video maker. He gives so much of his time to promoting harmony, goodwill, and Jericho.

RubberPoultry inspires and motivates. He is kind, helpful, always willing to share, and uses every opportunity to expand the Jericho universe.

On a personal note, he has been very supportive of me and I am grateful. I look forward to working with him for many years to come.

The Monster Fan of The Week is RubberPoultry.

Congratulations,RP, and thanks for all your hard work.

"There was this fella named Larry Stewart," he tells a man in the bus station. "He was an old friend of mine. He was called Secret Santa, and every year he would find a few people who might need a little money and he would ask that you pass on the kindness."

People respond differently to the gesture. Some cry. Some scream. A rare few even say "No thanks."

Others take the money and offer their own gifts. like Robert Young, who was homeless and had only 20 cents in his pocket. When Secret Santa gave him $200, Young, 50, took out an old notebook and ripped out a song he had written.

"It's yours now," he told Secret Santa, who thanked Young, and carefully tucked the pages into his pocket.

The new Secret Santa has also started a Web site, and is trying to recruit other Secret Santas across the country. "Larry's dream was for a Secret Santa in every city," Kansas City's Santa said."

Jericho Flashback: Boondoggie

Graphic by RubberPoultry.

Jericho Flashback:

"But the real lesson to be learned is that the monster isn't controllable. The NY Times ran an interesting article on "The High Price of Creating Free Ads." They tell the story of how Heinz has had so much difficulty controlling what they hoped would be a viral marketing strategy. Read the article and you'll see another example of how foolish it is to think that you can control something like fans that don't work for you."

Please help out. Only one question.

"In the past several years, TV fans have taken to the internet to launch campaigns in support of the shows they love. There was "Save Farscape," that lead to a resurrection in the form of a series of TV movies. There was the effort to save Firefly that ultimately lead Universal to believe that there was enough interest in the franchise to greenlight the Serenity movie. Most recently was the resurrection of CBS's apocalyptic drama Jericho. The campaign to save Jericho involved thousands of peanuts being sent to CBS in a symbolic gesture from the shows fans. In what seemed an almost impossible development, the network agreed to bring Jericho back for a shortened 7 episode season."

A Monster Fan Interview: Delana201

Delana201 is a fantastic Digger and all-around great Jericho promoter. I am proud to be able to present this interview to say Thanks for all you do.

1. What do you love doing besides watching Jericho?

I love quilting and playing computer games on Pogo. I have an '81 Corvette that has been in one shop or another for 6 years getting restored & is almost completed. When I finally get it back, I will certainly enjoy driving it.

2. How much time per week do you spend promoting Jericho?

Probably not near as much as others. I've only lived here two years, so my social circle is somewhat limited. I wear my T-shirts whenever I can and email
friends & family at least once a week with Jericho reminders - they're
probably very glad the reruns are over & they won't hear from me for
awhile.

3. What question do you hope will be answered in Season 2?

I would like to know more about Jake's back story. What did Jake do that he couldn't tell his father? Was it something more then shooting the little girl in Iraq? Where was he for those five years? I'd also like to know who set off the
bombs.

4. What would you like to see CBS do to promote Season 2?

I'd like to see fireworks, banners flying in the sky and loudspeakers blaring "Watch Jericho on CBS at such and such a time." That won't happen so I'll settle
for frequent promos (Rubberpoultry's if possible) and cast member
appearances on talk shows.

5. What else can fans be doing now to promote Jericho?

Until the new air dates are announced I think we're kind of at a plateau. We can continue wearing our shirts, distributing flyers and buying DVD's. Word of mouth, however, is the best promotion. Talk to family & friends who don't watch
Jericho & email those you can't talk to directly. Post frequently on the
CBS board & whatever other boards you usually go to. CBS wants to see
activity. Anything you can think of to get Jericho's name in front of the
public in a good way should be done. Just remember, we're a class act.

6. What attracted you to Jericho?

I'm not a TV viewer, so when I saw a preview for Jericho I knew I had to watch it. I really don't know why. I'm not a survivalist or a post-apocalytic drama fan. I was not particularly a fan of any of the cast members. Something just told me I'd be missing something great if I wasn't sitting in front of my TV Wednesdays at 8:00PM. That something sure was right.

7. How can we attract new viewers to Jericho?

Talk!! Talk Jericho whenever you get a chance. Family, friends, strangers - pigeonhole all of them and tell them what they're missing. I think stressing it's a show about surviving, not a doomsday show will help. If you can get them to watch a few episodes on Innertube,. hopefully you'll get them hooked.

8. What do you tell people about the DVD?

I make sure they know that Oct. 2's the release date and that it can be pre-ordered from Amazon.com or the CBS store. I've also said they should check out DVD's for the troops.

Any comments?

Just like everyone else, I was devaststed by Jericho's cancellation. I didn't find the Jericho message board til just a day or two before the renewal, so my thanks and praise to all those who worked so hard to save Jericho. I am eagerly anticipating season 2, 3, 4, etc. We will get them.

A Monster Cast Interview: Jennie Townsperson

Part II

I'm glad you all enjoyed Part I of Jennie's interview. I had some extra questions which she graciously agreed to answer. Thanks Jennie.

RubberPoultry, there's a little surprise for you in here so I hope you like it.

One last thing, Jennie. If you really want a starring role, just list the Rangers as a reference and drop a few Nuts on that executive's desk.

1. You film an episode which takes a long time then you watch it to see how it looks. Right? Do any of you actually watch Jericho when it's on TV or are you tired of it by then?

Personally I am never tired of Jericho and the story we are telling. Naturally I get tired from a long work day like anyone else but I love what I get to do on the show and to me it's like completing a piece of art to be able to see the final product in its entirety and in order since we shoot out of sequence. I don't always get to know everything in the script so it's fun to watch it when it airs - if I'm home. Otherwise it gets recorded! But most of the time we had some really fun days while we were in production where if we were working at the stages, we’d get to watch the episode during lunch that would be airing that night or that week. That was always special.

2. You said you like writing. Would you like to write a screenplay or a series one day or have you already written them?

Yes! I have two screenplays I’m writing. One is a thriller and the other is an historical fiction epic inspired by stories of my ancestors. I’ve always enjoyed writing and telling stories and at different times, I’ve had ideas for novels and screenplays. So in my downtime I enjoy exploring those story ideas. I didn’t start them thinking that I’d actually produce them but the more I work on these two stories in particular, the more I’d love to see them made into films. Maybe I will make that happen one day but for now mostly it’s one of the creative things I do for my own personal enjoyment.

3. You said you have a graphics background and you've seen RubberPoultry's work. He is amazingly gifted and has created so much for Jericho. What do you think about his fan art?

From what I’ve seen, I think his work is brilliant! I’m a huge fan! I know it’s no small task because I’ve done that kind of work myself. He’s not getting paid to do it and it comes from his heart. I wonder if people know what kind of time it can take to do graphics and videos like that. For him to donate his time to do it is a very special thing and says so much. I would love to see a version of his flag video made into a promo for CBS to air before our new season starts up. Wouldn’t that be great? I would hope they would consider him for that. He’s already done a great job promoting the show on the internet.

4. Does your family watch Jericho? Do they like it?

Yes, my family does like the show - so much that they forget to look for me! That only means that they truly love the show and find it really gripping and I couldn’t be happier for that. It means we are all doing our jobs well!

5.Will you be going back to acting classes soon? How do they help you grow?

Yes, in fact, I have recently been referred to some very renowned acting coaches. When my schedule allows, I plan on taking a class with Gary Austin. I really look forward to that. Classes always help me grow in anything I do. With acting, it is very good for me in keeping my skills and senses sharpened while continually bringing me new challenges to work with and learn from. The more I have opportunities to challenge myself as we do in classes, the better I feel I can be in the craft at work. This is always important to any serious actor. I am not here for fame - I am about being challenged, prepared, honest and hopefully entertaining and happy in what I do.

A Monster Fan Interview: RubberPoultry

****I have been making new posts every day around midnight and I've decided to change that. I will be posting earlier in the evening about 3-4 hours earlier than midnight. Just wanted to make you aware. This post will be dated today but is actually my Sunday blog. Thanks.****

Want to know a secret? I'm a big fan of RubberPoultry. No, you did not know that already! So, okay, I'm one of many. Want to know why I'm a fan?
1. He's creative and I love his work.
2. Most importantly, he is truly humbled by the attention. RP is not looking for credit or glory;he does what he does for Jericho and its' fans. He thanks everyone for their efforts however large or small. I admire that in a person.

If you are one of the many who would like to see CBS spotlight RP's work here are a few suggestions:
1. Digg this article to the front page of Digg.
2. Leave as many comments here as you can.
3. Send this link and/or a screen shot of this page to Audience Services at CBS.
4. Send same to anyone at CBS.

1. When did you realize you were hooked on Jericho?

I was hooked on Jericho before the show even aired. I
thought it seemed like such a great premise for a show
that I was hooked from the time I first started
watching the advertising. Of course, if the writing
and acting wasn’t so great, they wouldn’t have
kept me.

2. What attracted you to the show?

I guess I kind of answered that in the first question.
I’ve always been a fan of post apocalyptic stories,
so that drew me in.

3. When did you decide to start to start making all
your creative videos, posters, and other work?

I created my first Jericho piece on June 3. It was a
season 2 promo At that
time we were still (relatively) far from getting the
show back. I wanted to give everyone fighting some
kind of visualization of what it would look like if we
actually won. In the first incarnation of the spot, I
made a few errors because I was going so fast, but I
went back twice and fixed them in subsequent uploads.

A week after uploading the season 2 promo, I created
the now infamous Johnston Green/Dart Vader spot
Basically, I thought we could all use a laugh since we
still hadn’t gotten our show back yet. After that I
was hooked.

4. What are some of the places your work has been
used? Didn't you do the banner for DVD's for the
troops?

I’ve done quite a bit of work for the Jericho fan
sites. I try to help wherever I can. You can see my
work in the banners at:
JerichoLives
Jeritopia
Radio Free Jericho
Jericho rangers 4 our troops
Jericho Armory(slightly edited by the
site owner with permission)
CafePress (search "rubberpoultry")
I also did the banner for the Coalition of the Willing
site when it was around.
I created a flier for Comicon that got quite a bit of
exposure on the boards and Fan Central on CBS.
And of course, my stuff is all over the message
boards, most of which can be seen here.

And...yes, I did a promo graphic for the DVDs for our
troops. Honestly though, the effort is being driven by
the great folks over at Nuts for Jericho. I can’t
take any credit for it. I had created a graphic to
promote the DVD, and they asked if they could use it
for the project, so instead, I decided to create a
custom image for them because I believed in what they
were doing.

5. What do you hope to accomplish through your
creative work?

My goals all along have been a) to get the show back
and now b) to get a season 3. Along the way, my goals
have expanded to include trying to keep up the morale
of the fans with humorous and other images, and also
to support projects that I think are really worth
while.

6. If CBS called you today and asked what you can
offer them through your work what would you say?

First, I’d have to pick myself off of the floor...
And then when finally came to, I’d say that as a
fan, I think I may have a lot to offer in the promo
department. I think in many instances, people
responsible for creating promos aren’t necessarily
fans of the show. I also tell them that the diehard
fans (the ones who brought the show back by sending
letters, emails, nuts etc) would get a huge kick out
of seeing one of their own promoting the show on a
more “official” basis. Lastly I’d make sure
they’d seen what I’ve already done. Some of it
could be used as is.

7. NBC uses fan created artwork/videos. Why do you
think CBS hasn't gone that route yet?

I really don’t know. I think they’re missing out
on a huge opportunity. The democratization of media
that’s happened over the last decade means that fans
are becoming as savvy as some of the network pros. The
fan created stuff continues to get better and better,
rivaling and even overtaking some of what is put out
by the networks. Maybe that scares them, but I’d
think they’d want to take advantage of it. The more
you can expand your creative base the better (I’d
think). I’m sure some of it is legal issues.

Many fan
created works simply cannot be used because of
copyright infringements. There have been a lot of
great Jericho fan videos edited to top 40 music
tracks. Even if CBS wanted to use these, they
couldn’t without licensing the music, and that might
be impossible or cost prohibitive. I try when creating
my pieces to not use anything that isn’t original
(created by me or a stock royalty free source) or
already owned by CBS. I go as far as to use royalty
free audio tracks so (in the off chance they ever
approach me) I’m covered.

8. Is there anything you'd like to say to all the
fans?

These are the greatest fans ever! What they have
accomplished is unprecedented and historic. Except for
a few minor incidents, people have been very positive.

Not only have the fans promoted Jericho, they have
also promoted the efforts of some of us that are more
visible in the campaign. I’ve received countless
emails, responses and comments in support of what
I’m doing/have done. I’ve been told I have my own
fan club on more than one occasion. I’m humbled by
it all. People have been really great. I’m no more
special than anyone else is in this effort. Everyone
has played a part in this, so those of us who have
recognizable screen names don’t deserve anything
more than the passionate silent ones.

9. Comments?

I realized the other day that I’m glad Jericho was
cancelled. Sure it was a rough few weeks there, but
I’ve had such a great time getting to know so many
fans (virtually and in person). I got to meet Skeet,
Lennie, Ashley and the producers (at Comicon) because
“I was one of the (many) fans who helped save
Jericho”. That wouldn’t have happened if we were
back with no fight.

Lastly... the fight is not over! We still have a major
battle ahead of us. If these 7 episodes don’t bring
the numbers, there’s a good chance we’re sunk. We
have to re-invigorate the passion we had within us
during the campaign to save the show. Also DVDs sales
are going to have a big impact on Jericho’s future.
If people have the means, they should buy for
themselves, their families, libraries and the troops.

Thanks for all that you are doing to keep us going
sweat! I’ve enjoyed reading your interviews and
blog. It’s fans like you who are keeping things
interesting while we wait for season 2.

See? I told you he's always finding something good to say about others. I appreciate that RP.
